Lancashire Weaving is a small family workshop based in Clitheroe, and inspired by the region that shaped our history. Our work combines traditional handweaving, loom engineering expertise, and a deep respect for the textile heritage that once powered the North West.

We believe weaving shouldn’t belong only in museums or the pages of history. It should be a real skill passed on from generation to generation by real craftsmen.

Our Story

Lancashire’s mills were the backdrop to our families, our communities and our childhoods. Like many people from this region, weaving feels woven into our very genetics — part of who we are, part of how this place was built, and part of the identity we carry without even realising it. It is a crucial part of our heritage, and keeping the craft alive remains deeply important to us.

Over the years, we have worked extensively within textile engineering and weaving environments — maintaining looms, solving mechanical problems, and keeping older machinery running long after most people stopped understanding how they worked. Our experience spans both traditional shuttle looms and modern industrial machines such as Picanol airjet and rapier looms, giving us a rare ability to bridge the gap between old and new weaving technologies.

We are comfortable diagnosing faults that others cannot trace, rebuilding parts that are no longer made, and reading the mechanical “language” of looms — those subtle changes in sound, rhythm and tension that reveal what a machine needs. This instinct, combined with decades of hands-on practice, enables us to maintain and repair a wide variety of weaving equipment across different settings.

Alongside this engineering background, we have always been drawn to craft, heritage, storytelling and the quiet beauty of handmade work. Lancashire Weaving grew from the desire to bring these threads together — a place where traditional skills, local history and practical expertise could meet and evolve.

Lancashire Weaving was born not just as a business, but as a way of keeping something important alive: the skill, the craft, and the spirit of Lancashire’s weaving heritage.

What We Do

Handwoven Textiles

We create limited-run, small-batch textiles using hand looms and carefully chosen British yarns. Every scarf and piece of cloth reflects the patience and character of traditional weaving. As we grow, our aim is to reintroduce larger-scale weaving using restored shuttle looms such as the Hattersley Domestic, bringing Lancashire’s industrial story into a new era.

Loom Maintenance and Repair

We offer specialised loom servicing across the North West, with expertise in:

  • Traditional shuttle looms
  • Hattersley looms
  • Domestic and workshop looms
  • Picanol airjet and rapier looms
  • Mechanical diagnostics and troubleshooting
  • Setup, timing and tension adjustments
  • Restoration of older or neglected equipment
  • Sourcing and replacing hard-to-find parts

Whether it is a hobby loom in a home studio or a complex industrial loom in a heritage setting, we brings the kind of practical engineering experience you cannot learn from manuals.

Buying and Selling Weaving Equipment

We source, restore and rehome weaving looms, shuttles, warping mills, tools and accessories. If you have equipment tucked away in a loft or workshop, or you are searching for a specific loom, we may be able to help.

The Lancashire Weaving Journal

Our Journal is part diary, part technical guide, part heritage archive. We write about weaving projects, loom engineering, equipment restorations, craft fairs, and the local history that inspires our work.

Our Values

Heritage

We honour the region’s textile past by keeping traditional weaving and loom engineering alive.

Craftsmanship

We value slow making, quiet skill and the beauty of work done properly.

Connection

We want to bring people together — weavers, collectors, historians, beginners and experts.

Sustainability

We use natural fibres wherever possible and work to restore rather than replace equipment.

Our Vision

To build a working studio that celebrates Lancashire’s weaving traditions, supports weavers across the region, and keeps historic looms running for generations to come. We hope to become a trusted home for:

  • Handwoven textiles
  • Traditional loom maintenance
  • Restored equipment
  • Local craft knowledge

Our long-term goal is to operate restored shuttle looms such as the Hattersley, produce heritage-inspired cloth, and create workshops and exhibitions that reconnect Lancashire with its weaving roots.
